Fred joined the RAF parachute regiment as a medic. He said that he was asked which division he wanted to join and only knew of the parachute regiment. He said that he never thought that as a Medic after the war he would have to learn to parachute.

He spent most of his time at Royal Airforce Station Gütersloh in Germany where he rose to the rank of Squadron Leader.
